Bahamas Area Attractions
The
Hope Town Lighthouse
One of the only three
kerosene-powered lights in the world, the lighthouse's large Fresnel
lens floating in a bath of mercury generates a light visible more
than 17 miles. The lighthouse's 101 steps lead to a truly breathtaking
view.
Ardastra
Gardens and Conservation Center
Home to the world famous
marching flamingos, the Ardastra Gardens and Conservation Center
is part jungle, part gardens. Home to hundreds of mammals, birds,
and reptiles, the Center provides visitors a wonderful chance to
see, as well as hold and touch amazing wildlife.
Atlantis
A massive theme resort,
the Atlantis features a 14-acre "waterscape" of aquariums,waterfalls,
lagoons, and underground grottos. Other spectacular attractions
include an archaeological adventure, a casino, and an array of watersports
and other activities.
Garden
of the Groves
A true paradise, Garden
of the Groves is adorned by cascading water falls, botanical gardens,
and scenic trails. A petting zoo with animals and tropical birds
to feed will delight children of all ages. Open Monday through Saturday
from 9am to 4 pm and Sundays from 10 am to 4 pm. Guided tours are
also available.
Government House
Located in downtown New
Providence, the Government House has been the official residence
of the Governor General of the Bahamas since 1801. A commemorative
statue of Christopher Columbus has stood at the front of the building
since 1830.
Graycliff
Cigar Factory
Boasting a range of cigars
for the most refined connoisseur to those who are just learning,the
Graycliff Cigar Factory is the world's first cigar themed resort.
Created by Enrico Garzaroli and Avalino Lara, the cigar company
uses a secret blend of tobaccos to produce 7 masterpieces. A five
star restaurant with over 200.000 bottles of vintage wines complements
The Graycliff Cigar Company Experience.
Hydroflora Gardens
A fascinating look at
"hydroponics" or growing plants without soil; the Hydroflora
Gardens are situated on five acres and boast a variety of topical
and subtropical plants and flowers. Unusual exhibits include "Bible
plants" and a sunken garden. Open Monday through Friday from
9am to 5:30 pm, and Saturdays from 9am to 4pm.
Junkanoo
An exciting display of
Art and Culture, the Junkanoo festival features elaborate and colorfulcostumes,
dancing, food, and art. The biggest National Festival of the Bahamas,
the Junkanoo Parade is held twice a year, December 26th and January
1st.
Lucayan National Park
Boasting one of the longest
charted underwater cave systems in the world, Lucayan National Park
is east of Freeport on Grand Bahama Island. With more than six miles
of charted caves and tunnels, some of the caves have yielded important
archaeological finds relating to habitation centuries ago by the
Lucayan-Taino-Arawaks of pre-Columbian times.
Pirates
of Nassau
Located in the heart
of downtown Nassau, this truly interactive pirate attraction features
a replica of the pirate ship Revenge. Beginning on a moonlit dock,
the adventure takes you into the world of cutlass wielding, bloodthirsty
pirates. Open Monday through Friday from 9am to 5 pm, and Sundays
from 9am to 12pm.
Straw
Market
A bustle of activity
and excitement, the famous native straw market boasts a wide variety
of vendors who are always willing to bargain with buyers. Whether
looking for a hat, a bag or a unique souvenir, you're sure to find
it at this authentic marketplace.
